California Congregations Combine for High-Tech Pine Car Derby
Participants from 4 to 88 hit the racetrack.

CALIFORNIA—More than 70 members from the Southern California congregations of the Philadelphia Church of God met in Upland for their second pine car derby on February 6.

Southern California members set up their new racing track with an electronic timing system, remote control starter and computerized scoring program. Much of the enhanced features were customized by local member Marcel Van Someren.

“I have come to enjoy these races,” said member Don Brockelmeyer, who won first place. “They really bring all of the brethren together.”

Of the 64 pine cars, the winner was determined by 1/100 of a second.

Member Eva Healy, who won second place, attributed her success to “only beginners luck.”

First place in the youth category went to 13-year-old Daniel Hessong.
