Social Media Attracts Customers to Florida-Georgia Yard Sale
Congregations aim to raise $1,500 despite heat.

GEORGIA—Philadelphia Church of God members from the Florida West and Georgia South congregations held their third annual congregational yard sale on June 18 in Valdosta.

As the sun appeared over the horizon, some members were already erecting a large tent at the location where they hold Sabbath services. They displayed a variety of items remaining from a previous yard sale at a neighboring congregation, as well as additional items donated by members. Merchandise included housewares, books, clothes, knick-knacks and other goods, including car tires, art and musical instruments, which brought in larger sales. Media savvy members also used social media apps LetGo and OfferUp to advertise items.

“I felt that we had an experienced group of volunteers and everything flowed a lot easier than years past,” commented member Rebecca Stewart. “Everyone was willing to help, and we were able to get the merchandise moved.”

Despite the searing hot South Georgia weather on a Father’s Day weekend, sales brought in more than $1,800 for the Work, a 25-percent increase over the congregations’ goal.

Members from both congregations said they were delighted to serve and to share fellowship at the activity. After the last customer was served, many leftover items were packed up for next year’s yard sale, while others were donated to a local community thrift store.
