Alabamans Host Southern Pine Car Derby
Southerners from three states enter cars in race.

ALABAMA—The Birmingham congregation of the Philadelphia Church of God hosted members of the Corinth, Mississippi and Nashville, Tennessee, congregations on December 2 for the second annual Birmingham Pine Car Derby. Sixty-five members shared a chili dinner and then surrounded the race track for the main event of the evening.

Thirty-five precisely weighed wooden cars zoomed down the 50-foot track in consecutive heats. Gradually, the field narrowed as slower cars were eliminated.

Dane Hardin’s “Winner” did just that. Preaching Elder Joseph Short’s “Lightning Joe” took second. Michaela Jones and her car, “Revel,” came in third place.
